I wanted to talk about posture and its link to stress. One of the most prevalent and easily recognisable indications of the body is in a stressed-out state is the classic fight or flight posturing. the head moves forward ready to run, and the shoulders ran forward ready to fight. This is a reflex aspect of the final flight response however it is becoming increasingly common modern life.
Our Posture in modern life
- We look down at our laptops
- We constantly look down at our mobile, handheld devices
- Emotional reasons for poor postures, such as a girl being self-conscious about her body image or a tall person stooping to fit in.
- Our study, work and exercise habits work the muscles at the front of the chest that increase that negative windup
What I see in clinical practice
- Significant forward head posture
- Rounded shoulders
- Indications of thoracic outlet syndrome (numbness, weakness, carpal tunnel in the upper limb)
- Increased lumbar lordosis (increased sway lower back)
- Poor rib movement resulting in poor oxygenation
Common patient’s symptoms
- Shoulders feel like concrete
- Shoulder pain
- Chronic low back pain (accompanied by swayback)
- Headaches and neck pain are common as every cm the head moves forward it will create an extra 4 kg of load on the upper back and neck area.
In some cases, poor posture may be the first domino to fall in the whole stress response, but by no means is it the last regarding how it can affect health.
Our Managment Plan
- Ensure that the spine is moving and functioning properly
- Very specific standing first rib adjustments
- Advise on exercise
- Postural rehab using a posture pole
- In some cases, it’s advisable we incorporate the whole Sympathetic dominance Protocol
If you would like a copy of my free ebook on the sympathetic dominance protocol, and all the steps I give to my patients we use to help calm down the stressed out system, just click on the link below, and ill send it to you.
Make sure you click the link above to receive the checklist that I give my patients.
